My Roles: Photojournalist, Interpreter (Spanish-English), Video Editor

When the Oklahoma State Board of Education released the 2013 School Report Cards, some Tulsa parents were surprised to learn their children's school received failing grades from State Superintendent Janet Barresi.  The A-F grading system has been controversial at best and necessary according to Barresi in order to raise the standard of education in Oklahoma.

Reporter Tony Russell and I spoke to some parents one rainy afternoon as they were picking up their children from Kendall-Whittier, one of the schools that received a failing grade.  The parents we talked to were quick to defend their school and its educators.  They spoke highly of the extra attention and support they have received and even said they would not be willing to change schools.

Kendall-Whittier is in an area of Tulsa with a high proportion of Hispanic residents.  We felt it was important to include the perspective of at least one Hispanic parent.  I conducted the interview in Spanish from behind the camera and interpreted for the reporter.

For the broadcast, we had the graphics department create an English subtitle.  The soundbites in Spanish were short; but hearing Spanish in the middle of our broadcast surely caught the attention of viewers, especially members of the burgeoning Hispanic community.
