On a very cold Saturday, this unexpected story about two Tulsans beginning a new life together warmed the hearts of friends and onlookers.
A reporter and I were covering the 2013 Route 66 Marathon in Tulsa. Tasked with finding a harder news angle related to the race, we were prepared to cover angles such as security and economic impact.
Then we learned that a man planned to propose marriage to his girlfriend at the finish line of the race. This was just too good to pass up! We knew intuitively that this would be a very popular story, in particular on the web site. We decided to cover it, knowing that we would end up preparing this story in addition to the harder angle. Within 24 hours our TV-exclusive marriage proposal story had over 3,000 Facebook Likes (a.k.a. Recommends) on the News on 6 website.
